I'm glad Halle started her family, and I don't care who it was with. She's spent years making money for a lot of people like so many other talented African American female performers, i.e. Beyonce,'Rihanna, etc. and she deserves the right to have a family without all of the criticism she's receiving.

There are many, many people who have relationship problems because of the environment they grew up in - both black and white. I think it's telling that she has admitted to growing up in an atmosphere of domestic violence. When you are exposed to domestic violence as a child it affects you and your future relationships with the opposite sex. It takes people time to figure out that they themselves don't deserve to be treated the way a parent was treated. In addition, if your a male growing up like Chris Brown, watching your mom get beat, you need to figure out that beating your loved ones is wrong.

I like the fact that Halle has gotten out of these bad relationships and moved on. At least she hasn't stayed and continued to be mistreated. At the same time, she shouldn't be mistreating anybody either. As for telling everything about the African American men she's been involved with well, more power to her. I wanted to know that Wesley Snipes was an abuser and that he is responsible for her loss of hearing in one ear. I was sorry her and Eric Benet didn't make it, but at least she left him before his sexually irresponsible behavior caused her to get aids or something.

As a mixed-race woman in America, I think Halle realizes that in American society if you are mixed black and white, you are going to encounter the same prejudices that you would encounter if you are all black, therefore you'd better learn to deal with with. My mother was mixed as a result of slavery, but what really helped me was the fact that she strongly identified as being African American and she didn't try to pass for white because she loved who she was and she wouldn't turn her back on her brothers and sisters, grandmother, or aunts and uncles. She suffered prejudice from African Americans as well as from whites, who assumed she was white married to an African American man. By firmly identifying herself as African American, Halle will give her daughter the role model she needs to be able to develop a healthy racial identity.

At the same time, Gabriel Aubry as a French Canadian, has probably experienced his own share of prejudice growing up in Canada. Traditionally, French Canadians have been looked down on and treated in Canada like ethnic minorities are treated in this country. A French Canadian friend of mine was discriminated against as a high school basketball player growing up in New Hampshire. His family was treated just as bad as African Americans because there was extensive prejudice against them on both sides of the Canadian border. So, when he questions whether he wants his daughter to be identified as African American, it may be because he's trying to protect her from being a victim of discrimination. Unfortunately, it's a complicated situation in America, and you don't just make someone eligible for "white privilege" by saying they are "white". The best thing that both of the parents can do in a situation like this,is to be open and honest about their ideas on race and ethnicity and to raise their child to be proud of who she is - in all her diversity. Hopefully, they will cultivate a mixed group of friends who reflect their own background and ethnic diversity, who can serve as positive role models for their child.
