Because alot Southern and New York rappers dont respect nor like each other. Plus, alot of Southern rappers are hell-bent to earn respect lyrically. A rapper like Jay Electronica could never make it in New Orleans, so thats probably why he took that trip to New York.

Look here, he needs to chillout on the whole South vs. Northeast @#$%!.
I am originally from NYC but have lived in CA too long to claim the east. So, I know the discrimination carryout by the east firsthand, as my own family has come at me sideways over my location. However, I do understand their position. Some things back East terms of Hip Hop have always been ahead of the rest of the country.
The main issue with the south is how the culture supports garbage. It is not a question of intelligence, as I have family from the south who are very intelligent. So, when I hear the music emanating from the south, I tend to question their moral fortitude. It is almost as if they suppress any worthwhile lyricism. When I used to visit family in places like VA, FL or GA, I would come across dudes who were into the Wu, or who were into Nas, or who was into Rakim, but they werent given a chance to gain exposure. Instead, the people in power of the music industry decided to go with Little Jurob the MC. I mean, when the south first came on the scene they had The Getoboys, a group well known for lyricism via Scarface and Bushwick Bill to a lesser degree. But who earn more noteriety? Motherphucking Luke and the 2 Live Crew. And then, they had Outkast, who at first did come across as a southern happy happy joy playa playa group, but with their second release they came with true lyricism, a perfect segue for Goodie Mobb whose first album wad a classic. But received more attention? Motherphucking Ludacris. Who, by the way, is very lyrical, but a lyrical in terms of being overly braggadocious, no real lyricism. So, it is all about choice. The south chose the ignorant shyt at every turn, which is normal for American, where we tend to gravitate to the lowest form of entertainment. Can anyone wonder why Jerry Springer or Maury is still on TV.
Lastly, south motherphuckers need to stop defending the bullshyt. What theyre doing is no different from women who condemn men for calling a bytch a bytch, the same woman they may call a bytch. Get off the bullshyt. If a motherphucer is wack, then a motherpucker is wack. That is the only difference between the south and the north. Motherpuckers in the north will call a spade a spade. People have gone after Diddy, even Jay Z, for being wack. You can see it as a crabs in the barrel senario. But, its more than that, as quality control is necessary. But, motherphuckers in the south tend to defend one another to the very end.
Bottom line: Save the bullshyt for someone else. A communities choice in music is, at times, a reflection of their intellectual maturity.

I don't really see the criticm of what he talks about in this video. He spoke on the disrespectful way NY artist talk about southern rappers. He explained his perspective and that was that.
As for the other poster saying that ignorant southern hip hop is a reflecetion of the community, this is the type of commentary that Jay electronica is complaining about. YOu so eloquently drew the comparison between ignorant southern artists outshining the more concious southern rappers. very well framed argument. but the fact is that none of the NY community want to admit that they have some ignorant flash in the pan artists that they heavily support too. There is nothing socially redeeming about the whole Dipset Movement. Cam was ignorant as hell and Jim Jones may be one of the worst rappers ever! he was doing just what Soldier boy and all these other ignoramouses have been doing. selling there swag and lifestyle. But you knwo what? they got crazy play in the NY area. the packaging of the ognorance may be slightly different but the product is the same. But NY'ers never seem to want to admit to that. And if you are going to call Ludacris someone not worthy of notoriety for any Lyricism then what the hell is 50 cent?
All I am saying that the choice of ignorant, lowest common denominator types of entertainment are not relegated to being part of some southern archetype. there is a whole lot of ignorance getting play north of the mason Dixon line.

Im from the south. Im old enough to remeber when east coast rappers would tour down south. We gave them love back in the 80's. This north and south @#$%! been going before rap. My family members would always come down south and talk down on us as if we were slow. We would visit them and thier living conditions was worse than @#$%! didn't owned @#$%!. East coast folks talk alot of @#$%!. Down south folks make things happen. We own @#$%! down here. If you dont like what is going on with music. Get your ass and off the computers and make hot @#$%! that the community will gravitate to. Simple! Luke, Master P,Cash Money,Rap-a-lot,Slip & Slid, and all the ATL rappers didn't what until the record label called they got up and did it for them selfs and thier community. We live types of lifestyles. I can't relate to ride the subway. We love our beats down south. If your beats are whack and your lyrics are unrelateable, I dnt care if you rap or sing your @#$%! is wack. Its a recession' I don't have all day to caught your point in no damn song. I have to go get my money right. I love my bothers and sisters in the north, but man up and take it back. Stop complaining like lil girls on these @#$%! like what we like. Simple!!! That dont mean your are more educated than the next man. Don't forget we have majority of all HBCU's in our region. Malcom X was all talk and Martin Luther king got @#$%! done.

Look, I was never a fan of Dipset. I, too, agree with you on their ignorance. However, I was not in NYC during their reign, so I cannot confirm nor deny their popularity. I can imagine that you had a certain group of people into ther shyt. You know, the pretend hustlers and project rats. I put all my money on the fact that many people really into Hip Hop in NYC did not like the Dipset. I know I did not like their shyt, especially their color scheme, as it was too Harlem for me. And that is something else you need to take into consideration when addressing NYC Hip Hop, each borough has its own identity. Harelem has always been known as the flashy nicca captiol. So, what else can you expect? Niccas in BK, BX or Queens would not dare wear pink, or all the gaudy jewelry worn by Cam. You know why? Because they wouldve gotten robbed--point, blank, period.
And who said 50 was lyrical? Now, I present for his rise, and what I saw was disturbing. All you saw all over the city was advertisement for his movie, you know, the poster with him holding a gun and a baby. But, if you left the city, and went to the suburbs, you wouldnt see the posters. What does this mean? It means they were force feeding our kids bullshyt. And when I say, "they," I mean corporate America, not some white boogeyman. I didnt support 50 nor did a lot of other people. Of course you deny his ability to compose a catchy course, but anything beyond that would be blasphemy.
And when you said, "As for the other poster saying that ignorant southern hip hop is a reflecetion of the community, this is the type of commentary that Jay electronica is complaining about," I totally understand what said could be misconstrued. But see, Ive been many, many cultural events, such as Chinese New Year, Saint Patricks Day, Fourth of July, etc. And you know what is common among these events? Music. Music is the fabric by which communities create common ties. If your community gravitates towards "booty bouncing" music, then this means your community is infatuated with booties. And, Im sorry, if you concentrate on booty too much, then yes, youre slow in my opinion. Booty isnt that important in the grand scheme of things. But, if you were able to comprehend my first post, you wouldve understand my big picture snapshot when I said, " It is not a question of intelligence, as I have family from the south who are very intelligent." Which means, people in the south have always been very intelligent, but what they allow to gain popularity does not shed a positive light on their intellectual capabilities. Even Outkast complained about the south disregarding their work once they went a little left. They knew what they were saying was not too popular among their kinsmen. Shyt, Goodie Mobbs second album did not get any respect from the south, so much so that they eventually disbanded.
And like the postered stated, and as Jay Electronica stated in the past, no one in the south wanted to listen to him. Why didnt Cash Money or No Limit sign him? They were on top when he first started rapping. You know why? Because both labels knew lyricism was out of style in the south, which has a lot of to with some Uncle Tom as niccas knowing that their white consumer base does not want to hear lyricism, they just want to dance and have fun, and thats cool, but when do we stop dancing and start thinking. Shyt, if it was for people like Kanye or Little Brother, Wayne may still be on some wobble dee wop shyt.
My main point: The southern Hip Hop community needs to stop defending wackness. We know some people in the north may have shunned you when you stepped on the scene, but not everyone, especially not me. I loved the Getoboys album with them running with no shirts on, or Mr. Scarface, or Riding dirty. You have to look at it like this, the south, and, at first the west, was to the north as a little brother is to a big brother. You know how the little brother vies for his big brothers attention and respect, whether its sports or music. Its the same social dynamic.

WOW !!!!!! 1st of all why does tha video say 8:54 when it stops like at 6 sumthin? 2nd. Look I rep both east and west. Why? cause I was raised on both. Eatlle 1/2 my life and NC tha other 1/2. All my famm lives in tha east from NY to FL. i been all over tha East frm tha BX to Georgia. Luv tha east. i also Luv tha west, been all over frm WA to AZ. So I can understand tha passion of reppein whr u frm and earnin respect. I feel tht he sayin cats like 8 ball mjg, slim thug, cham, luda, T.i. outkast, Scarface, UGK ect. Tela all got bars and ain't tha norm b.s. South trash tht we hear on tha radio. I feel tht they slept on and they great lyricist and emcees from tha south. I have made a similar argument. But, tht is cause I appriciate MUSIC. Just alot of like my fav artist came frm NY. i been to NY. Not everyone is poppin, But they still got alot of dope emcees holdin tha torch. so to tha person sayin f*ck ny rap, u a fool and have no history of hiphop. No matter what happens to me tha best thing I EVER did in my life was go to 1600 riverview off Cedar and sedgwick. Tha mecca of hiphop. Mind U tha only Nicca I think that ever wore a Seattle fitted in tha BX, lol. Got sh*t frm my ppl out there too, lol. (Luv my home team tho we not doin good Like Tha YANKS Lol.) But, I had respect enough to know I would not be a Emcee myself of even knw rap if it was not frm NY. Period. So I feel like this. I know there is good and wack every whr. Great emcees in tha west tha east and tha south, and whn I blow tha NW. But there are wack ones too. Whn Rza made that comment tha state of hiphop was well and still is garbage. he didn;t say specific names. So why would this cat take it so personal and mention his name? Why not prove him wrong and Do U? Him mentionin this at this time is irrelevant. Who cares? He claims it was long ago and he don't feel like tht no more. RZA probably too busy to even care cause he directin movies now. So why mention it? All it's gonna do is start internet beef. We need to come together not apart. Rap is in shambles. We need to unify to take back control. it will never be what it was. Especially now that tha greats are gone. But, together we can take it where it's never been. And trust me Wacka ain't tha move I'm talkin bout. This dude is a cool emcee, but he should have thought wit more logic and less emotion before he made this video. We need to make it to where Rap and Hiphop is taken as serious as Rock and country. Do u know some ppl still think tht rap is just a phase. Look I do listen to rock and other forms outside of rap, but I could not tell u a certain style or "Type" of country music. but I know this amn much, they don't beef on tha diffr styles and it sales world wide. Maybe not to U and me, but to majority. Tht is where we want to take this hiphop. Maybe Wacka is a start, lol. I ain't hatin, just wish tha nicca would say somethin I could understand even if it's for tha club. If you like that type then cool, but we all gotta be more open to allowin other niccas to shine too. Everyone can get this money and shine together. Not just one style. not just one way. They controllin it all. Let's stop tha beefin wit tha territories. Stand Up yall. Till then see U when I make it. NW Luv

You are close to accurately describing the north and south conflict. Yes, when I visited family members down south they owned homes, and we lived in a cooperative. But, your house may be worth less than my co-op, value-wise. See, the reason you motherphuckers can portray this bigger than life lifestyle is because the cost of living is totally different. You pay less for real estate, food (which is due to low transportation cost, as many food manufacturers are located in the south or midwest, a la so many fat people in the south), and cars. You motherphuckers have always been able to buy more big ticket items due to a lower cost of living. Say I make $50,000 in Boston or New York, this amount of money isnt shyt, but lets say I make $50,000 in Texas or Alabama, I can live like a king. And this folks, is due to a lower cost of living. And then, you have to factor in the way you motherphuckers will pull off the equity in your home to buy cars and high ticket items, also known as leveraging, a practice that will eventually end, thats why we are in this recession. Banks are starting to accept the fact that owning a home does not mean you will pay back the loan. You were, and most likly still are, living on borrowed time. Its called America. We all did it, but you motherphuckers always did it to the tenth degree. And that goes for places out west as well.
You know everyone down south or out west as an old relative who owns a home with a few old ass cars collecting dust with plants growing through it in their front yard. You know uncle Cletis, who never really budgetted is money correctly, but he owns his home, and that is all he has to show for his life. A home and few beat up old cars.
Honestly, I never downplayed the souths get up and go, there ability to essentially create economic stability. But this is mainly due to the higher concentration of black people, which is obviously, without harping, due to slavery. You have to create an economic base because your patronage may not be welcomed in other communities. Which is cool. I love that shyt. But up north, or even out west, some nonblack person will corner the market in any one industry, whether its patronized by blacks or not. And if one were to "get off their ass", as you say, and to service a particular group, they could face some penalty. Of course they are not as influential as they used to be, but in the past, certain organizations, like the mob, was not trying to hear all that black owned shyt--point, blank, period. You saw the movie "Hoodlum." Do you think that was totally based on a fictional tale? Hell No.
And dont let me get started on the HBCUs. A majority of the motherphuckers who go to them do not graduate. Do your research. With the exception of a few, they have a 30% graduation rate, and that is low as phuck. And then, you have motherphuckers who graduate who cant construct a convincing arguement to save their lives. Believe me, I know. When California, where I live, started their whole anti-affirmative action crusade a lot of Californians opted to escape to the HBCUs, as opposed to fighting for their right to learn. A majority came back with no degree or a degree with no real worth outside of the schools location. But we know all the reputable HBCUs: Howard, Morehouse, Tuskegee, Spelman, and Hampton. And that is 5 out of 105 institutions. This 4.7% of the HBCUs are worthwhile. Is this a good percentage? Hell no! Plus, a piece of paper does not qualify a person as being intelligent. School is essentially about turning in papers in a timely fashion and knowing how to schmooze with the faculty, and thats it--nothing more, nothing less. I dont care what institution you attend, Ivy or otherwise. The only difference is the level of intensity, and thats it.

I'm from Philly and i can admit that there was a time when it seemed like all we where hearing from the southern hip hop scene was some Lil' John type, Wakka Flocka type, Soulja Boy type nonsense. there was a time when it seemed like most of the big aritsts from the south where performing "minstrel rap". it seemed like there weren't any lyricists coming out of the south. I was reminded of this feeling recently when I heard waka flaka refer to Lyrical hip hop as "dictionary rap".
I have come to realize though that there are rappers out there who are from the south that produce and perform Lyrical and intelligent Hip Hop. Jay Electronica, Little brother, Dre 3000 and many others are holding it down in the south. There are also some artists up north who are making braindead music but i think that the culture up north tends to discourage it more than they do down south.
There are many people who see Hip Hop as more than a genre of music. They see it as an expression of Black Culture and these people take things like lyrical content, cleverness, and intelligence seriously. They see MCing as a craft to be respected and constantly honed.
There are also people who see rap music as a way to make money and artists who think this way don't much care how ignorant they look as long as they are selling records.
to people who value intelligence and lyrical content, those people are little more than modern day minstrels and sellouts. this is not a strictly southern thing it's happening all over in one form or another but it does seem that the southern hip hop culture is the most tolerant of "non dictionary" or "non lyrical" rappers and -generally speaking- the north is the least tolerant.
I'm from up north and I understand the basic sentiment that the RZA was trying to express. I also understand where Jay Electronica is coming from (except for the lame a$$ tomato remark).
It's not about North vs. South. There are a dumbass, ignorant rappers from up north. there are intelligent, witty, lyricists Down south.
in the end, there is a culture war going on for the soul of hip hop. It's not about north and south, it's a culture war inside hip hop. it may not be fair but to many people, Hip Hop is the voice of Urban Black America. What do we as a people want to say? What are artists like Waka Flaka saying about the intelligence of the Black man in America?
It's about more than just how many records get sold or who's hot right now.
